This atlas contains fifty four maps including the world (2), thematic charts (3), Americas (9), Asia (6), Africa (4), Australia (1), and Europe (29) on a total of 48 single and double-page sheets. Of U.S. interest are maps of North America, United States (eastern half), and Mexico. The map of North America names Texas and is a part of Mexico despite its 1840 publication date. In the Northwest, British claims are shown pushing south to the Columbia River showing their interests in the region. The atlas also contains a nice map of Australasia and a lovely Mountains and Rivers plate. Full contents include title page, list of maps, 14 page introduction, maps, and a 40 page index. Engraved by Sidney Hall and published by Adam & Charles Black in Edinburgh. Hardbound in black quarter leather and tips over brown cloth boards.

The maps are overall good to very good with light toning, scattered foxing, and occasional soiling. The map of England/Wales has a long centerfold separation extending through two-thirds of the sheet, and the map of Scotland has a chip/edge tear just extending into the image at left. The maps of China and the East Indies have separated from the block, which is indicative of the binding being somewhat loose. The front cover is detached, and the covers and spine are moderately to heavily worn.
