A. Amerique Meridionale, by Nicolas Sanson, from La Science des Personnes de Cour..., circa 1735 (6.5 x 5.8"). This is an uncommon smaller edition of Sanson's quarto-sized map of South America. The mythical L. de Parime and Manoa o el Dorado (City of Gold) are still shown straddling the equator. Another mythical lake, L. de Eupana en de los Xarayes, appears in the center of the continent. There is little speculation in the relatively unknown Amazon region. Published in Zacharias Chatelain's multi-volume La Science des Personnes de Cour... Condition: Issued folding with just a hint of toning.
B. Amerique Meridionale Divisee en ses Principaux Etats avec Privilege, by Jean Lattre, from Petit Atlas Moderne ou Collection de Cartes Elementaire, published 1783 (10.0 x 7.1"). This handsome map of the continent delineates political divisions and includes many place names, most of them confined to the coasts. The vast Pays des Amazones features little detail aside from the Amazon and its tributaries. The mythical Lake Parime is depicted in a reduced form. A table at the left provides a breakdown of the various regions. There are four distance scales in the bottom right corner. Condition: There is minor soiling and a small unobtrusive hole at left that has been repaired on verso with archival materials.
