This small atlas volume was issued to accompany Emma Willard's History of the United States, or, Republic of America. It contains 12 maps, including 5 double-page maps, most of which have contemporary outline color. As a historical atlas, the maps are presented chronologically and are taken at key points in American history including when the Pilgrims landed (1620), the end of the French & Indian War (1763), Declaration of Independence (1776), and the signing of the U.S. Constitution (1789). The atlas begins with an undated "Introductory Map" showing the Locations and Wanderings of the Aboriginal Tribes, and concludes with a double-page map of the then present-day United States in 1826. In this latter map, the United States is shown extending west beyond the Mississippi River with admission dates noted for states not part of the original 13 colonies. The map depicts Michigan Territory, North West Territory, and Arkansas Territory in its largest configuration. Emma Willard was an education activist who founded the first school for women's higher education, the Troy Female Seminary, in 1814. Due to the school's success, Willard was able to travel across the globe advocating women's education. The school still operates today, having been renamed the Emma Willard School in 1895. Published by White & Gallaher in New York. Second edition. Rebacked with stiff paper boards.
