This comprehensive report by the Director of the United States Geological Survey describes all progress and discoveries made during 1887 and 1888. It includes a nice, large fold-out map, Map of the United States Showing the Progress of the Topographic Survey During the Fiscal Year 1887-8 (28.0 x 17.4"). The report provides the financial statement of the department, the administrative reports, and accompanying papers. The volume contains the following reports: "The Charleston Earthquake of August 31, 1886" by Capt. Clarence Dutton; "The Geology of Cape Ann, Massachusetts" by Nathaniel Southgate Shaler; "Formation of Travertine and Siliceous Sinter by the Vegetation of Hot Springs" (Yellowstone) by Walter Harvey Weed; "On the Geology and Physiography of a Portion of Northwestern Colorado and Adjacent Parts of Utah and Wyoming" by Charles A. White. There are 88 plates and 61 additional illustrations, including several maps, some folding and in color. 717 pages. Hardbound in brown cloth with embossed cover and spine.

Text and plates are very good with light toning. The United States map is clean and bright with a 4.5" edge tear at left. Text block is a little loose. Covers have some shelf wear with bumped corners.
