This informative and profusely illustrated reference by Rudiger Joppien and Bernard Smith covers the artwork generated by the first of Captain Cook's voyages from 1768 to 1771. As Smith notes in his preface, "Cook was the first of a new breed of explorers who made full use of visual as well as verbal means for conveying the results of his observations." The first part of the book includes analysis on the work of Sydney Parkinson, the resident artist of the Endeavour. It is illustrated by 52 plates. The second section is a comprehensive catalogue of all the paintings and drawings produced on the expedition, featuring 191 items, each with an accompanying description and illustration. Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press. 247 pages. Hardbound in red cloth with gilt title on spine and an illustrated dust jacket.
