This map shows by municipality the dollars of taxation assessed per capita, with white shaded areas denoting less than $1 per capita, and the darkest orange shaded areas representing $17 and over. The number of inhabitants per square mile are indicated by ranges of blue numbers superimposed on the map to indicate the approximate population density (2-18, 18-45, and 45+). The areas outside of the shaded blue lines indicate those that have fewer than 2 inhabitants per square mile. The information for the map was gathered during the 1870 census. Lithographed by Julius Bien. This map was published in the first statistical atlas of the United States, which was compiled by Francis A. Walker, the Superintendent of the Ninth Census and Professor of Political Economy and History in the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale College.
