This pair of engravings was used to illustrate Chastellux's Travels in North-America, in the Years 1780, 1781, and 1782. This work provided a first-hand perspective of the American Revolution and is one of the great contemporary Revolutionary War accounts. The Marquis de Chastellux was one of the forty members of the French Academy and a Major General in the French army in the late 1700's. He served under the Count de Rochambeau and joined forces with General Washington in the famous march on Yorktown that led to Cornwalis' surrender. The map (10.3 x 6.8") was engraved by J. Duff and focuses on the region between the Chesapeake Bay and the Appalachians, displaying his routes while serving under Rochambeau. The engraving (7.8 x 5.5") shows Natural Bridge in Virginia, which Chastellux encountered on his route.

Both are issued folding with light soiling and foxing. The map has a narrow left margin, likely as issued, and a small chip in the bottom margin. The engraving appears to have a cross shape in the image at top left that was erased.
