This large and detailed map delineates the progress of public surveys throughout the state. About one-third of the state remains unsurveyed. Large inset lists 433 "Private Grants finally surveyed" plus three Indian Reservations (Nome Lackee, Nome Cult, and Smith River). The map is signed in the plate by E.F. Beale, then U.S. Surveyor General - California. Beale is more famously known for his Wagon Road Survey from Fort Defiance, Arizona to California in 1857-58 where he used camels as pack animals. Beale continued to lobby for use of the animals as superior pack animals for the rest of his life.
