This rare pictorial map of the Lake Pend Oreille region was created by Stan Gelling and published by the Ross Hall Studio at Sandpoint, Idaho. It was drawn in a style very similar to the Jolly Lindgren national park maps and goes as far as using Lindgren's "Hysterical Map" terminology in its title. The map was likely produced to cater to the Naval presence in the region following the creation of the Farragut Naval Training Station on the lake in 1942. The map's primary purpose was for humor, with illustrations showing a naked woman at Maiden Rock, a sailor asking King Midas for a payday loan, and a bear chasing a man with caption "Ever see a 'gold' rush?" Decorated by a scroll title cartouche and border featuring additional illustrations. We found only one other example for sale in the last 30 years and no institutional examples located on OCLC.
