This charming and uncommon map focuses on the popular sport of yachting in Long Island Sound. The loosely drawn map extends from New York City to Newport, Rhode Island and includes a note stating that "If you think anything is correct on this chart you're crazy." Depth soundings in feet at mean low water ("the meaner the better") are included, and yacht clubs, yacht club races and cruises are prominently featured on the map. Humorous images and quips fill the map, although the "Portrait of a Mean Indian" and "Beware Wild Savages" notation have not aged well. This map was published in the July 1929 issue of The Sportsman. The two-page spread was printed on two separate sheets, and therefore this lot includes five additional pages of text and a photo-reproduced etching of a polo player on a horse.
John R. Held, Jr. (1889-1958) was an American cartoonist who is best known for his 1920's portrayals of dancing (including the Charleston), driving, playing sports, and other popular activities of the era.
