A. Mexico, by Aaron Arrowsmith, Jr., from A New General Atlas..., dated 1817 (9.8 x 7.9"). This attractive map depicts the provinces of Mexico, spanning from Lake Tipanogos (Great Salt Lake) south to Campeche. Texas is not named on the map. The west coast is labeled New Albion with several place names located along the coast including San Francisco and San Diego, but the Great Basin region is almost entirely blank. The topography and river systems are well represented. Published by A. Constable in Edinburgh. Engraved by Sidney Hall. Condition: On a watermarked sheet with faint dampstaining and a 3" edge tear at right that has been closed on verso with tape.

B. Mexico, California & Texas, by Adam & Charles Black, from Black's General Atlas, circa 1857 (14.9 x 10.4"). This delicately engraved map depicts Mexico and the region recently acquired by the United States in the Mexican-American War. The map features a post-Gadsden Purchase border between Mexico and the United States. Missions in California dot the route along the coast as far south as Baja. Detail throughout the Southwest and Texas includes forts, roads, towns, and Indian Lands. A great number of towns are located in Texas including Waco Village, Uacosi, Encinos, S. Antonio, Austin, Houston, and Liberty, but there is no sign of Dallas or Fort Worth. The huge Utah Territory stretches between California and Indian Territory. New Mexico Territory is in its largest extent, bounded by Mexico, California, Utah, Texas, and Indian Territory. The inset map of Central America is titled Guatimala or Central America. This lithographed map is a nice example of transitional coloring using a combination of early printed color (Mexico) and outline coloring applied by hand along the boundaries. It was produced in Scotland and finely engraved by Sidney Hall. Condition: Contemporary color on a slightly toned sheet with minor soiling in the inset map and blank margins. There is a tiny tear in the bottom margin that has been closed on verso with tape.
