This is the first state of Duval's double-hemisphere map, which generally follows Sanson's world map of 1660 with the exception of the representation of Australia. Nouvelle Holande is updated with more place names, and the conjectural northern coastline has been eliminated. In North America, California is shown as an island, and Lake Michigan is open-ended towards the west. A large Terre de Iesso spans nearly the entire North Pacific. In South America, the mythical Lake Parime is unnamed but is identifiable by the city Manoa el Dorado on its shoreline. Duval also depicts a massive southern continent, which is nearly attached to Nou. le Zelande. Surrounding the hemispheres are celestial spheres and diagrams showing a compass, wind directions, and the climactic zones. Paragraphs of text also surround the map with information on the geography, climactic zones, and divisions of the world. Pierre Duval was Nicolas Sanson's nephew and pupil. He published a wide range of atlases and individual maps with many of the maps based on Sanson. Nicolas Berey's imprint appears at bottom. This map is quite rare.

A nice example on a sheet with a bunch of grapes watermark, a hint of toning along the centerfold, a small archivally repaired hole along the centerfold at top, and narrow side margins, as issued.
