This 31-page pamphlet promoting national support for a road system was written by Charles Henry Davis on behalf of the National Highways Association. Davis and the Association were very early proponents of a national system. The text highlights the precedent of large federal support for railroads, the impact of infrastructure investment on property values, and enhanced access to schools for children. Davis called on Congress to establish a National Highways Commission to plan and develop the national highway system with federal funds. To illustrate their vision, Davis included a map entitled National Highways System Proposed by the National Highways Association (11.4 x 8.0”) which demonstrates a 50,000 mile network spanning the entire country. Later versions proposed a 100,000 mile system. While the Commission was not enacted, federal funding of roads began in 1921. Paper wrappers.
