This lot contains 2 early plans of Cape Cod Canal along with its original report (a third map issued in the report is lacking). The first map is listed on page 2 of Clausen & Friis, making it one of the earliest maps included in a government report.
A. Survey of the Valley and Ponds Auxiliary to a Contemplated Canal Between Buzzard's & Barnstable Bays, State of Massachusetts, and Town of Sandwich, dated 1825 (13.9 x 8.0"). Extends from Long Pond south to Herring Pond and the Monumet River. Drawn on a detailed scale of 880 yards per inch by W.B. Thompson and engraved by John Farley. Condition: Issued folding on fragile paper with a number of fold separations that have been closed on verso with archival tape. The bottom margin has been extended with a small portion of border drawn in facsimile.
B. Profile of a Proposed Route for a Canal Between Buzzards and Barnstable Bays, (17.6 x 10.6"). A detailed profile extending the length of the canal with wooden stakes marking various points along the route. Includes a small inset profile of "The Experimental Line." Drawn by Frederick Searle and engraved by William Harrison.
Accompanied by the 15-page untrimmed, unbound report (6.0 x 9.5") printed by Gales & Seaton in Washington.
