This rare map of southwest Pennsylvania was published by C.T. Rainey. It spans from Pittsburgh (here spelled "Pittsburg") to the border with West Virginia and includes Allegheny, Washington, Westmoreland, Green, and Fayette counties. The level of local detail is astonishing, with the entire area divided into individual land plots, each with the name of its owner and acreage. Lots owned by coal companies are highlighted in color, emphasizing their critical role in the region's economy. Constructed railroad lines, located lines, and oil and gas wells are identified as well. The original copyright is credited to Rainey and dated 1896, but this is the revised edition, dated March 1898. A stamp below the original copyright assigns the new copyright to N.P. Hyndman. Photolithography by A.B. Graham. Backed in linen. Folds into brown cloth boards with gilt title on front cover: "Rainey's Revised Map of Pittsburg Coal Bed from Pittsburg to West Virginia Line." A label on the marbled pastedown reads "Rainey's Map of Pittsburg Coal Region from N.P. Hynman, 23 Conestoga Building, Pittsburg, PA." The stamp of C.F. Lyon of Washington, PA is located on the verso of the map and on the pastedown.
