A. A Chart of the West Indies, from the Latest Marine Journals and Surveys, by Mathew Carey, circa 1795 (15.9 x 11.1"). This handsome map covers the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean in fine detail. Florida is divided into East and West, and New Orleans and the mouths of the Mississippi are noted. Cat I. is noted as "the first land discovered by Columbus in 1492." A key at bottom left identifies the colonial powers in the region. The map was first published in Carey's American Atlas... (1795), the first atlas of America printed in America, and then appeared in subsequent Carey atlases. Engraved by William Barker. References: Wheat & Brun #687. Condition: A nice impression with a small wormhole at right that has been infilled with archival materials.

B. Golfe du Mexique avec les Isles Antilles, by Jean Lattre, from Petit Atlas Moderne, dated 1783 (9.8 x 7.1"). This small French map of the region includes a table that breaks down the various island groups in the Caribbean. Charleston, Savannah, Ft. Royal George, St. Augustine, St. Marc d'Apalache, Pensacola, Mobile, Biloxi, and New Orleans are all named along the coast of what is labeled as the territories of Louisiana and Florida. Les Cenis appears in present-day Texas. An ornate title cartouche adorns the top right corner. Reference: cf. Rumsey #0421.025. Condition: On watermarked paper with faint toning along the centerfold and a touch of color offsetting.
