Issued by the Michigan Department of Public Instruction, this gorgeous pictorial map depicts Michigan's history, culture, and architecture in an elegant, modern style. The left side of the map is dominated by an ornate vignette that incorporates a globe showing the Western Hemisphere with an illuminated Michigan, the state seal, a large sailboat, a hunter and Indigenous man, and more, all under the arc of a rainbow. At right is an Art Deco building and a swooping airplane. The old Fort Detroit is depicted at top right, with a portrait of Cadillac, the founder of Detroit, just below. Towns and cities are accompanied by representative illustrations. Various vessels fill the lakes, including La Salle's ship Le Griffon in Lake Michigan. A note from Governor Luren D. Dickinson makes the case for the "Friendly State" as a vacation destination: "Michigan, set in the cluster of the World's four greatest fresh water seas, has for many years been the adopted state of millions second in their hearts only to their own. Put yourself in this picture and we feel you'll have a setting for a perfect summer." The verso features text covering the state's flag, tourist attractions, capitol, education, agriculture, and more.
