This charming pictorial map was designed by Richard F. Lufkin to promote the Boston Elevated Railway. The map roughly centers on Boston Common and the nearby Public Garden. Along the grid of streets, several small illustrations depict notable locations, such as Fenway Park, the Museum of Fine Arts, Fanueil Hall, and the site of the Boston Tea Party. Surrounding the main map are bird's-eye views capturing different areas in and around the city, including Harvard's campus, the Navy Yard (with the USS Constitution), and South Boston. A key at bottom right identifies rapid transit lines, surface and underground trolley lines, and bus routes. An index on verso locates museums, parks, public buildings, hospitals, hotels, historical places, cemeteries, monuments, theaters, and much more. Lufkin (1895 - 1963) was a cartographer, draftsman, historian, and a native Bay Stater who was an active participant in various Massuchusetts historical societies and associations. Printed in Boston by Walker Lith. & Pub. Co. The map appears in a 50-page booklet, Boston Elevated Railway Guide and Information - Sixth Edition, with another three-color map (7.0 x 8.1") that shows the elevated-subway and tunnel system.
