Compiled by W.T. Moran and drafted by C.P. Eager, this map details mining claims in northern Nevada, in and around Silver City and Virginia City. It delineates surveyed, unsurveyed, and patented areas and identifies the owner of each individual claim. A table at bottom includes information on some of the more notable mines. County lines, town sites, railroads, and the Sutro Tunnel Grant are all located. Completed in 1879, the Sutro Tunnel is a drainage tunnel connected to the famous Comstock Lode, the richest silver mine in American history. On this example, a previous owner has marked the mining properties and claims of the United States Comstock Mining Company in red pencil. North is oriented to the right.
