This lot includes a pair of bird's-eye views depicting both an ancient and "modern" Mexico City:
A. Ancien Mexico. Oud Mexico, circa 1760 (11.1 x 7.3"). This exquisite view depicts Mexico City or Tenochtitlan as it was before its destruction by the conquistador Hernan Cortes. The city's complex of islands and bridges is well rendered, as is the surrounding mountainous terrain. In the foreground is the foreboding image of Spanish explorers moving toward the city. Published in a Dutch edition of Prevost's Histoire Generale des Voyages.
B. Nouveau Mexico, circa 1754 (10.4 x 7.0"). This excellent view shows the sprawling city in the mid-eighteenth century with locals bustling in the foreground. Engraved by Chedel.

Both maps are sharp impressions on watermarked paper. The view of old Mexico City was issued folding and has marginal toning.
