This lot features two maps of Minorca, one of the Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain, by Thomas Kitchen and issued in London Magazine:
A. A New Map of the Island of Minorca Drawn from an Actual Survey (8.2 x 6.6"). This little map features towns, roads, and the topography of the island. The decorative title cartouche features a vignette of the castle of St. Philips, which protects the harbor entrance. The British gained control of Minorca in 1708 during the War of the Spanish Succession. They held the island until 1756, when it was captured by the French during the Seven Years War. This map illustrates the theater of this battle.
B. A New Plan of the Town & Harbour of Mahon with St. Philip's Castle and Fortifications (9.1 x 6.6"). This small map of the southeastern tip of Minorca centers on the harbor that leads to the town of Mahon. Soundings and navigational hazards are shown in the harbor. On land, roads, mountains, and bird's-eye plans of Mahon and St. Philip's are depicted. It features a similar title cartouche to the map above with a vignette of the castle of St. Philips.
