Widely recognized as one of the Blaeu family's most ornamental productions, this map is an exquisite example of the art of mapmaking. The map is centered on Frankfurt and the river Main; the heart of the modern German state of Hesse. The map provides a wealth of information on the countryside including towns, villages, castles, fortifications, bridges, gallows, mills and inns. Across the top are the allegorical figures of Justice, Wisdom, Harmony, and Peace. Surrounding the map is an incredible border made up of 36 coats of arms of the local nobility. Latin text on verso.
