Wheatland Curator of the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments at Harvard University at the time of publication. Through a series of articles written by experts in the field, it covers the history of finding longitude at sea from 1500 to the development of the marine chronometer in the late 18th century. It is copiously illustrated with images in black & white and color. 437 pages. Hardbound in dark blue cloth with gilt title on spine and an illustrated dust jacket.
B. The Illustrated Longitude, by Dava Sobel & William J.H. Andrewes, published 1998 (9.3 x 10.3"). This handsomely produced book is the illustrated edition of Dava Sobel's best-selling 1995 book Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time. It tells the story of John Harrison, the 18th-century clockmaker who invented the chronometer, a crucial tool in the ability to be able to accurately determine longitude at sea. William J.H. Andrewes contributes 178 historical illustrations to bring a new dimension to Sobel's book. 216 pages. Hardbound in green cloth with gilt title on spine and an illustrated dust jacket.
