This interesting thematic map depicts Catholic dioceses in the United States. From 1860 to 1890, the number of Catholics in America tripled; this map showcases that growth. It was published as a supplement to Les Missions Catholiques, a weekly Catholic bulletin. A key identifies locations of archbishops, bishoprics, and vicariates. At right is an in-depth statistical table that lists the 11 ecclesiastical provinces with total population, Catholic population, number of priests, and number of churches. According to the table, there were 6,198,062 Catholics in America, out of a total population of 38,363,520 - that is 16% of the country's population. Engraved by L. Wuhrer and printed by Dufrenoy.
