This map of the city of New Orleans was published in the September 16, 1874 issue of the New York Herald. It shows the street-grid pattern of the city and highlights the "Scene of the Late Outbreaks" along the Mississippi River, referring to the race riots that occurred following U.S. attempts to establish civil rights for freedmen, both immediately following the Civil War and during Reconstruction. The map notes "where the fight began" along the riverfront and delineates the locations of the July 30, 1866 and March 5, 1873 riots. A key at bottom right provides additional detail on railroads, canals, public square and markets.
