This splashy pictorial map celebrating the history of New York City was published by the National City Bank of New York. In Manhattan, illustrations show Alexander Hamilton's house, the Battle of Harlem Heights, the capture of the Continental Army spy Nathan Hale, Washington swearing the oath of office, and more. Fordham, an Indian camp, and a battle at West Farms are among the sites and events highlighted in the Bronx. Brooklyn features the Battle of Long Island, settlers prepping for an Indian attack in 1660, Ethan Allen as a prisoner, and the oldest church on Long Island, built in 1654. In Queens, Europeans can be seen purchasing land from the Yemacah Indians in 1656. An inset at bottom right shows the Vanderbilt Ferry heading from Manhattan to Staten Island and Lafayette receiving a warm reception upon returning to the States circa 1820. This example is mounted on linen.
