This handsome historical map by Karl Smith focuses on the life and achievements of General Robert E. Lee. The map centers on Virginia, with notations of Civil War battles, and extends to neighboring states, stretching as far north as Gettysburg and Cashtown. Nine vignettes along the top of the map illustrate notable episodes from Lee's life. At top center is a portrait of Lee backed by a Confederate flag. At left is a large vignette of Lee's birthplace in Stratford and a chronology of battles in which Lee played a part. At bottom is a genealogical chart, a biographical timeline, and another large vignette of Lee and other Confederate generals. A decorative compass rose and border complete the composition.
