This uncommon plan view of Santo Domingo shows the Rio Ozama and the Ciudad Colonial, which is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. Santo Domingo was the first seat of the Spanish Empire in the New World. There is nice detail of the fortifications, and the legend below the title identifies five key locations, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, the oldest cathedral in the Americas, and Fortaleza Ozama. Ships fill the river. A coat of arms appears above the title.
