This highly decorative pictorial map of Edinburgh was designed and executed by the great Kerry Lee for the Travel Association of Great Britain and N. Ireland and the Scottish Tourist Board. The Edinburgh Castle is prominently shown with several historical figures nearby, including Robert the Bruce, William Wallace, and Oliver Cromwell. The streets are delineated and sites of interest are boldly illustrated to showcase their architecture; among the cultural and historical locations on display are the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scott Monument, the National Gallery, Princes Street, the National War Memorial, St. Giles Cathedral, the Parliament House, the Royal Infirmary, and much more. Historical personages and events fill the map. Along the top of the map is the city's coat of arms surrounded by six vignettes and two heraldic shields. The title cartouche at bottom is flanked by ten more vignettes of castles, hills, and other attractions. Just as you will find illustrations of Georg Hoefnagel within his own compositions for Braun and Hogenberg, artist Kerry Lee appears signing his name beside his dog in the bottom right hand corner of the map, near Arthur's Seat. After World War II, Lee designed several maps of British cities for his own company Pictorial Maps Ltd.
