This is the entire 12-page issue of The Daily Graphic from December 4, 1875, which features a superb satiric illustration on the front page. The image depicts the tenuous situation with Turkey in Europe during the Great Eastern Crisis and just prior to the Russo-Turkish War. The Ottoman Empire was faced with surmounting debt to foreign governments that it was unable to repay, and also threatened by the imperialistic pressures of the major European powers. Turkey in Europe was encircled by the major powers in Europe, which also controlled the surrounding waterways: Austria-Hungary and the Danube, Russia and the Black Sea, and Britain and the Suez Canal. Below the image is prose calling Turkey the "sick man," which was coined by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. An additional paragraph of text describing the illustration is on verso. The Daily Graphic was published between 1873-89 and was the first illustrated newspaper in the United States. This issue of the newspaper features numerous short articles, advertisements, and illustrations, including a lovely half-page engraving of "Duck-Shooting" based on a painting by Paul Bril.
