This stunning bird's-eye view shows the Crimean Peninsula at the time of the Crimean War (1853-1856), a war between the Russian Empire and several European powers for influence over territories of the declining Ottoman Empire. It centers roughly on Sevastopol, depicting the city, bay, and nearby fortifications in great detail. It extends south to Balaclava and spans into the distance to Eupatoria (Yevpatoriya). A key along the bottom identifies 71 sites of interest, and the terrain is intricately rendered. Countless ships fill the waters. Projection and lithography by A. Maclure. Printed by Maclure, Macdonald, & Macgregor, "Lith: to the Queen." This example is mounted on linen.
