This handsome hand-colored lithograph depicts a male velvet scoter. According to an accompanying page of text, the species is commonly found in the northern parts of Great Britain, the Arctic regions of Asia, Denmark, Russia, Kamchatka, and Siberia. "Drawn from Nature & on Stone by J. & E. Gould." John Gould (1804-81) created some of the most beautiful bird prints ever produced and was known throughout the world as "The Bird Man." This lithograph was published in his 5-volume The Birds of Europe (1832-37). Printed by C. Hullmandel. The lot includes a sheet of text providing information about the bird's habitat, appearance, and more.

Condition: B+

Full contemporary color with minor foxing and small chips mostly along the bottom edge, not impacting lithographed image. There are remnants of paper tape on verso. Text sheet has moderate offsetting and remnants of paper tape along the sheet's left edge.
