This graphic naval scene depicts one of the last events of the 12th Siege of Gibraltar. The siege was part of the larger War of Spanish Succession and represented a victory for the Grand Alliance members (England, Netherlands, Austria and pro-Habsburg Spain), who controlled Gibraltar until the end of the war. Warring ships fill the view and show the Grand Alliance dominating their French and Spanish rivals, including graphic depictions of men getting tossed from exploding ships and jumping off of sinking ones. Gibraltar is depicted at upper left.
