This gorgeously produced facsimile atlas resurrects the only English edition of Ortelius' great atlas. It was published as Volume IV of the fourth series of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Series of Atlases in Facsimile. The complete English edition of 1606, printed for John Norton and John Bill, was only the fourth large folio atlas produced in England. At the time of publication, it was the tallest book ever produced in the country, and the one with the most engraved plates (166). The black & white double-page maps are tipped in as in a classic atlas. The introduction by R.A. Skelton provides a biographical sketch of Abraham Ortelius and reveals much about the book trade of the seventeenth century. Hardbound in red buckram with dust jacket. Limited edition of 800 copies.
