This attractive pictorial map of the state was prepared by Dion Greame Kelley for the California Centennials Commission in anticipation of the centennial anniversary of California's statehood. The map itself is based on the seminal George Goddard map of California, originally published by Britton & Rey in 1857. It is surrounded by 13 vignettes of historical events, including Cabrillo discovering California, the Portola expedition discovering San Francisco Bay, the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846, the Donner Party, the beginning of the Gold Rush, and President Fillmore signing the bill admitting California into the Union.
