Mildred C. Green designed this handsome pictorial map of New Jersey. It was originally published in 1935 as part of a loose series of 9 "romance maps," many of which were compiled and/or executed by educated women with an interest in American history; this example is a reissue published to coincide with the tercentenary of New Jersey. The map is full of illustrations of the state's history and culture, including Henry Hudson's landing in 1609, Stanger's glass works in Glassboro, portraits of Audubon and Walt Whitman, the Battle of Monmouth, an Indian trail and stagecoach route, Washington crossing the Delaware, Rutgers University, Edison's light bulb, Rip van Winkle, and more. The decorative title cartouche at bottom right incorporates colonists, an Indigenous man, and several coats of arms. Text panels at left and right relate interesting factoids about the state. Compiled by Leetta Eaton Alward and Elizabeth Alward Kilbourne.
