This vibrant pictorial map of Ireland fills the landscape with illustrations of Irish culture and historical events and personages. Miniature portraits of notable Irish figures overflow into the surrounding ocean, with galleries of "Modern Bards" (Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, W.B. Yeats), "Dublin's Sons" (Sir Benjamin Guinness, Jonathan Swift, the Duke of Wellington), "Irish Patriots" (Lord Edward Fitzgerald, Constance Markievicz, Lord Charlemont), and "Erin's Heroes" (Eamon de Valera, Robert Emmet, General Patrick Sarsfield). Several ships from different eras also fill the seas, ranging from Saint Patrick escaping to France in a dog trader's boat to the sinking of the Lusitania. The gorgeous borders and title cartouche are inspired by the classic Celtic illuminated manuscripts the Book of Kells and the Book of Mac Durnan. Published in Chicago by Colortext Publications, which created a series of Story Maps between 1935-50.
