"Leodiensis Dioecesis Typus", Ortelius, Abraham

This splendidly decorative map covers the Meuse River valley, including Namur and Liege, with north oriented at left of map. It is exquisitely engraved with an elaborate strapwork title cartouche and scale of miles. This example was included in the only English edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, published in 1606, with English text on verso.

Condition: B

A dark impression with full contemporary color. There is light toning and a few small abrasions and worm tracks along the centerfold. There is an extraneous crease at right and along the centerfold. In the blank margins there are two tape stains and two small chips, all well away from map image.
