This interesting history of ancient France includes a very fine map by Nicolas Sanson, also dated 1649. The map is beautifully engraved with mountains, rivers and forests and shows ancient regions and place names as described by Julius Caesar. It is decorated with three elaborate cartouches, including one flanked by Roman soldiers. Engraved dedication page, left blank, and 96 pages of French text describing the map. Octavo (9.25 x 7") with contemporary full vellum binding.

The map is a sharp impression on a bright sheet that was cut horizontally through the center of the sheet and reattached with old paper on verso. It is unclear when this was done as the map is firmly bound into the volume. The vellum is warped with two chips on the front cover. The text is very clean and crisp throughout with a few spots of foxing.
