This graphic naval scene depicts the Siege of Toulon fought between France and Great Britain (pro-Habsburg Spain/Grand Alliance) in the War of Spanish Succession. The scene shows British ships, under the command of Admiral Shovell, warring with French ships while smoke, fire and cannonballs engulf the waters. On land, Toulon is burning in the distance. Shovell was supporting Prince Eugene, Duke of Savoy, who led a land battle from the northeast. The French would win this battle after disease had ravaged the Duke's forces.
