"Novam Hanc Territorii Francofurtensis Tabulam…", Blaeu, (Family)

Widely recognized as one of the Blaeu family's most ornamental productions, this map is an exquisite example of the art of mapmaking. The map is centered on Frankfurt and the river Main; the heart of the modern German state of Hesse. The map provides a wealth of information on the countryside including towns, villages, castles, fortifications, bridges, gallows, mills and inns. Across the top are the allegorical figures of Justice, Wisdom, Harmony, and Peace. Surrounding the map is an incredible border made up of 36 coats of arms of the local nobility. Latin text on verso, published between 1640-55.

Condition: B+

A nice impression with full contemporary color on a light toned sheet with a large watermark of the god Atlas. There is some expert paper restoration (leaf casting method) in the blank borders and just entering the bottom of the map, and the centerfold has been reinforced. There is some creasing at top right and a small hole in one of the arms at bottom left.
