This unusual map illustrates the Kerch Stait (formerly known as the Cimmerian Bosporus) between the Sea of Azov in southern Ukraine and the Black Sea and not the Bosphorus as indicated by the title. The map is finely engraved with detail of the mountains and farmland in the region and is filled with ancient place names; the only recognizable one being Theodosia - modern Feodosiya. The title cartouche features a storm raging above what appear to be travelers or nomads. Dated 1665 but published in 1667.

References: Pastoureau, SANSON V B [161].

Condition: B+

A nice impression with contemporary outline color on a sheet with a large coat of arms watermark. There is light toning along the centerfold and edges of the sheet, as well as foxing mostly confined to the edges of the sheet.
