This large map of Asia on two sheets (each 45 x 19.5") was originally published by the Robert de Vaugondy family, and reissued here by their successor, Charles Francois Delamarche. The map extends from the Black Sea to the East Indies and is intricately engraved with fine detail of mountains, rivers, lakes, and scores of place names. In the Pacific, Hokkaido is oversized but correctly shown as an island and named Edso Gasima ou Isle de Jeso. To its east are spurious fragments of Compagnies Land and "land seen by Jean de Gama." To the north is another small fragment of land with a notation related to Tchirikow's discoveries in 1741. The ornate title cartouche is surrounded by decorative elements including wind heads, a camel, vases, vegetation, and a small town view at center. Includes 8 distance scales at lower left. Dissected and backed with linen. Folds into marbled-paper slipcase.
