This striking sheet is embellished with mythological scenes and figures, including Atlas supporting a globe, Zeus, the angel of Fame, and Neptune. At bottom is a view of a large library with scholars and explorers gathered around a table with a globe and atlases. The engraving was created to list the maps included in the atlas, which have been printed on a separate sheet and pasted onto the background as normally found. This example was published by Mortier, whose name along with a description of his other offerings is below the list of maps. This printed list of maps is of particular interest as it includes two important maps by Mortier: Carte Particuliere de Virginie, Maryland, Pennsilvanie, la Nouvelle Iarsey. Orient et Occidentale and Carte Nouvelle de l'Amerique Angloise Contenant la Virginie, Mary-Land, Caroline, Pensylvania Nouvelle Iorck, N: Iarsey N: France.

A sharp impression with full contemporary color on a lightly toned sheet. There is a spot of soiling in the list of maps and moderate soiling along the edges of the sheet, which also have some chips and tears that are well away from the image and have been archivally repaired.
