This scarce, petite geography book was intended for young children who had just mastered reading and writing. The author states that the subject of geography was previously thought to be "above the capacities of young children, and fit only for the study of higher classes. But it is fully ascertained, that with the use of maps, it is one of the most suitable exercises for children of any age." The book includes a total of 8 single-page plates including maps of the world in two hemispheres, North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Also includes a solar system plate at the back of the 82-page volume. 4th edition. Gray stiff paper wrappers and signed on the front free endpaper by "John M. Williams 1823." These Cummings "First Lessons" geographies are uncommon on the market, with only one past sales record for this 1823 edition and 5 sales across all publication years.
