This is a handsome facsimile of the German language edition of Sebastian Munster's pioneering Cosmographia that was published in Basel in 1550. It is from the Mirror of the World - A Series of Early Books on the History of Urbanization First Series - Volume V, published by Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd. Munster probably had more influence in spreading geographical knowledge throughout Europe in the mid-sixteenth century than any of his contemporaries. His Cosmographia contained not only the latest maps and city views, but also included an encyclopedic amount of detail about the known - and unknown - world and its history. The book is heavily illustrated with a plethora of striking maps, plans, and woodcuts. Dr. Ruthardt Oehme wrote the in-depth introduction, which appears in both English and German. Hardbound in brown faux leather with gilt decorations on front cover and title on spine.
