This charming pictorial map of Hollywood was created by cartoonist John Held Jr. Accuracy is set aside due to the fact that "things change so rapidly in Hollywood it is useless to attempt to be accurate;" rather only four main boulevards are shown (Wilshire, Santa Monica, Sunset and Hollywood) and important cities and neighborhoods are haphazardly placed. Major movie studios and the homes of famous stars are marked. Stereotypes associated with Hollywood are also illustrated, such as "autograph hound" and "blondes a dime a dozen." The map accompanies an article on "What's Going on this Month Motion Pictures."
John Held Jr. (1889-1958) was an American cartoonist who is best known for his 1920's portrayals of dancing (including the Charleston), driving, playing sports, and other popular activities of the era. During the 1920's, Held was living in Weston, Connecticut, about 30 miles west of Yale.
