This detailed map of the state was lithographed by William Burford on behalf of the Parry Manufacturing Company. It is delineated by county and presents townships, county seats, rivers and creeks, railroads, and more. “Gravel Roads” are prominently depicted in red overprinting throughout the state while large illustrations of the company’s buggy models are presented in the left margin. The map folds into the front cover with text “When you get Tired Riding a Bicycle Try a Parry Buggy.” This successful buggy manufacturer used maps to advertise its wares on the system of improved roads, here shown as gravel. The same approach was used later by the nascent automobile industry to promote motor travel. Two institutional examples are listed on OCLC.
