"Here is the Utah map you asked for" - so says the advertisement attached to this rare and gorgeous pictorial map of the Beehive State. It was compiled and drawn by Paul Clowes, a Utahan artist known for his Western landscapes and his contributions to Utah-themed commercial art in the 1930s and 40s. The map notes that "Southern Utah is famous in technicolor movies" and Clowes succeeds in achieving that Technicolor effect with his vivid portrait of the state. The map is covered with striking illustrations of national parks and monuments, historical events, and wild life. Among the sights are Bryce Canyon, Zion, the Arches, a stagecoach, a sunbather in the Great Salt Lake, a rattlesnake, and a buffalo. The state is flanked by historical vignettes, including a portrait of Brighham Young, the settling of Deseret, the driving of the Golden Spike, the Mormon Temple, the last Indigenous uprising, and the State Capitol. Text along the bottom of the sheet sells potential visitors and residents on the state's many attractions. Published by the Utah Department of Publicity and Industrial Development.
