This rare and striking map of the western coast of South America appeared in the French edition of A Cruising Voyage Around the World, a chronicle of Woodes Rogers' circumnavigation of the globe from 1708 to 1711. Based on the English map engraved by John Senex for A Cruising Voyage, the map spans from Lima south to Coquimbo ou Serena, identifying several towns and cities, rivers, mines, mountains, and more. French text notes turquoise found east of Copiapo and the famous silver mines of Potosi. There are rhumblines in the Pacific. On his voyage, Rogers rescued marooned Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk from the Juan Fernandez Islands; Selkirk's account of his time on an uninhabited island would inspire Daniel Defoe's famous novel Robinson Crusoe.

A nice impression issued folding, now flat, on watermarked paper. There are light spots, minor soiling, and a pair of tiny tears around the folds that have been closed on verso with archival tape. A binding trim in the bottom left blank margin has been replaced with old paper, and chipping along the top right edge has been archivally repaired.
